Living in the Gourmet Ghetto

Even if you are not familiar with this neighborhood, you will quickly understand how it got is name: it has one of the highest concentrations of good eats anywhere this side of Paris, France. Only 2 blocks away is the world class Chez Panisse restaurant and cafe. Next to Chez Panisse is Cesar's, a Spanish tapas bar and the Epicurious Garden. Across the street is The Cheese Board and Cheese Board Pizza for fresh breads, wonderful cheeses, and truly gourmet pizza. Nearby are Bistro Liaison (French), Saul's (New York deli), Cha Am (Thai), Cafe de la Paz (South American), Poulet, Gregoire, and many others. The Farmers' Market comes to North Shattuck on Thursday afternoons.

You have your choice for coffee: The French hotel, Peet's Coffee & Tea, and Starbucks. Pick up a Danish on your way to work from The Virginia Bakery (since1934) or enjoy tea or coffee service with special European pastries, cookies and desserts at Masse's.

There are two major grocery stores: locally owned Andronico's, with in-house bakery and deli, and Safeway. There's also a "corner store" - The Produce Center - which sells fruits, vegetables, and a variety of staples. If it's not edible, you can probably find it at the newly remodeled Long's Drugs .

Other nearby amenities include the incomparable Black Oak Books, with almost-nightly readings, as well as wonderful little shops up and down Shattuck, on Vine, and in Walnut Square - lingerie, hats, maps and travel books, flowers, apparel, walking shoes, antiques and gifts, fine art, jewelry, beads, etc. etc. etc.

Live Oak Park is home to the Himalayan Faire in May and the Live Oak Craft Faire in June. There's an annual street fair, The Spice of Life Festival, on North Shattuck in the fall.

There is even a post office. The UC Campus and the North Berkeley or Shattuck BART stations are within walking distance. Express buses to San Francisco also stop on Shattuck Avenue.

The Gourmet Ghetto provides a feast for the eyes, for the mind, for the taste buds, and for the soul
